The Daniel Fast - Day 12 Devotional

Today's Day 12 devotional is coming from YouVersion's 21 Day Fast reading plan.  Each day you will find devotional content as well as scripture readings for the day.  The scripture for Day 12 is 2 Corinthians 1.

In this passage, Paul praises God as the source of all comfort.

"All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.  God is our merciful father and the source of all comfort.  He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others.  When we are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us."  {2 Corinthians 1:3-4}

Did you know that God is a source of comfort that you can rely on?  Did you know that He is always there for you, no matter what your struggles are?  He is with you always.  If you are dealing with a particular challenge during this time of prayer and fasting, you can take comfort in the fact that God is with you through whatever it is that you are dealing with.  He wants to provide you with strength and hope and encouragement.  All you need to do is turn to Him and ask.

YouVersion's devotional content for today talks about sources of comfort.  Is food one of your sources of comfort?  It says:

"Reflect on how much your thoughts have been overtaken with craving certain foods, missing the thing you're fasting from, or even how much weight you could lose.  Is it often?  If it were alcohol or a harmful drug, would you consider yourself addicted if you were this consumed with your desire for them?...Pray that the God of compassion and all comfort will become your primary source of comfort."

I thought that this was an interesting thing to consider.  When I first read the passage, my thoughts were focused on God being a source of comfort in challenging times.  Something we can rely on without question. I hadn't considered, until I read the devotional content, that one could be turning to other things as a source of comfort.  Perhaps the thing you are fasting from {food, for example} is the one thing you take comfort in.  If you are doing this, then you aren't relying on God as your source of comfort.  If we keep on relying on food or whatever else it might be, we can become so focused on that that we lose sight of God as being the true source of comfort.

In the final nine days of the fast, consider where it is that you are finding comfort.  Are you recognizing sources that are not of God?  Consider what they are and pray about how you can turn from those and toward God Himself as your primary source of comfort and hope.
If you are doing a fast right now, how is it going for you?  What are your major challenges right now?  What are you learning so far?  Do you have any advice to share on how to get through the difficult moments of the fast?  I'd love to hear!

I will be sharing devotionals such as this and other ideas to help you through this journey.  If you are reading a bible plan or devotional during this fast, what are you learning?  I would love it if we could share our insights so that we can be a support to each other during this time.  Link up below and grab a button while you're at it!
